Use of ^(203)Hg Neohydrin in Assessment of Renal Function in Non-Visualizing Kidney

Abstract
Renal scanning with 203Hg neohydrin was done in forty-three cases in which no excretion was visible by intravenous pyelography. Twenty-one of the kidneys involved were also weighed, and any connections between weight and scanning results were examined.
The findings were as follows:
1. Of the forty-three cases, no renal scanning was depicted in about two thirds. In about one third of the cases excellent to poor uptake was depicted, showing normal to decreased functional pattern in the renal parenchyma.
2. Of the twenty-one kidneys, the total renal weight was found to be generally increased. After removal of contents of the grossly diseased areas, there were no significant deviation from normal renal weight. The macroscopically and microscopically normal parenchyma was also weighed and found to vary in weight from naught to a normal figure.
3. The weight of parenchyma that was normal in appearance was, in each case, closely correlated with the 203Hg neohydrin renal scanning results.
4. 203Hg neohydrin renal scanning was considered to be a highly valuable method for determining function in renal parenchyma in cases showing no excretion by intravenous pyelography.
